The Varenne is a fine 3-star hotel on a quiet street in a good location on the left bank. Rooms are typically Parisian-small but clean and perfectly suitable. Breakfast was good. My one serious reservation is that the staff were neither especially helpful with regard to tourist-type questions, nor were they outgoing or particularly friendly. They were professional and courteous and tried to be helpful, but they were not warm and they did not seem very knowledgeable.
