The Nord-Pas-de-Calais is a French administrative region consists of two departments, Nord and Pas-de-Calais. Until the late twentieth century, "North" also meant the region, as the department.
The region was formerly part of the Southern Netherlands and Spanish Netherlands, and finally became French in 1713 under the name of french Netherlands.
The provinces historical component Nord-Pas-de-Calais are mainly Artois, the Boulonnais, Flanders and Hainaut, which designations remain very common today.
